Specialist eye care, delivered where it's needed most

Home Opticians brings expert NHS sight testing directly to people who cannot easily access a high street practice, with a particular passion for children and young people in special educational settings.

Eye care without barriers

Good vision changes everything. It shapes how a child learns, how an older person stays independent, and how any of us make sense of the world around us. Yet for many people, a routine sight test is out of reach, not because they don’t need one, but because the traditional model was never built with them in mind.

Home Opticians exists to change that. We are a specialist domiciliary optical service, which means we bring the full sight testing experience to the people who need it, in the environment where they feel most comfortable. No stressful journeys. No unfamiliar clinics. Just expert, patient centred eye care delivered with care and skill.

Our heart is in special educational settings

Testing the eyes of a child with complex needs is not simply a matter of using smaller equipment or allowing more time. It calls for genuine expertise, endless patience, and a deep understanding of how each child communicates, responds, and experiences the world.
This is the work we care about most.

What makes our approach different:

We come to the child

Every sight test takes place in the child's own school, a familiar, structured, supportive environment where they feel safe and are far more likely to engage.

We communicate in the child's language

Our team works alongside Makaton, symbol boards, and each child's own communication system, and we prepare thoroughly before every visit so no child is met by a stranger who doesn't understand them.

We test what we can, when we can.

We pace every appointment to the individual child, pausing, adapting, and returning across visits where needed, never forcing a test to completion at the expense of a child's wellbeing.

We make glasses easier to live with.

Our eye health reports include a photograph of each child's prescribed spectacles, a small innovation, born from real world experience, that helps school staff and families quickly identify glasses when they are lost or mixed up.

We use the full range of specialist techniques.

From preferential looking assessments for non verbal children to objective methods that require no spoken response at all, our clinicians are trained and experienced across the complete spectrum of need, including the most complex presentations.

Clinician led care.

The vast majority of our sight tests are delivered personally by our Principal Optometrist, ensuring consistency, accountability, and a familiar face at every visit.

Two decades of experience.

We have spent two decades delivering eye care outside the traditional practice setting, refining our approach against some of the most complex clinical needs in the country.

A genuine specialism, not a sideline.

Domiciliary and specialist eye care is not something we do alongside a high street business. It is who we are and all we do.

Innovation with purpose.

We are constantly looking for better ways to deliver our service, from the technology we use to the way we report our findings, always with the patient's experience at the centre.
